1 in 3 at deadCENTER
Well, it has been one busy week for 1 in 3!!!! Last weekend 1 in 3 had its World/Oklahoma Premier at the 10th Annual deadCENTER Film Festival. The festival ran from Wednesday June 9th – Sunday June 13th. We were all very excited to be a part of the festival! So, we made sure to come out everyday to support the other films that had made it into the festival. It was also a great chance to meet people and promote the upcoming screening of 1 in 3. As Saturday drew near, I must say that I became rather nervous, but rest assured, had nothing to be nervous about because the screening on Saturday was FANTASTIC! There were so many elements that made the screening FANTASTIC – Angela Startz’s press release following the screening sums it up best:
OKLAHOMA FILM WINS OVER FESTIVAL AUDIENCE
OKLAHOMA CITY – The lights dimmed as stragglers rushed in, trying to find seats in the packed auditorium. Chairs were lined across the back of the theater. The introduction to deadCENTER Film Festival ran as anticipation mounted in the room. Then the first scene appeared: a woman, running from room to room in a dream.
The audience was hooked. The story of Sydell Thomas and Ophelia Metz, two women involved in a domestic abuse shelter, unfolded on the screen with plot twists and turns that no one anticipated. When an equipment malfunction stopped the presentation in the middle, a collective groan erupted from the crowd, followed by patient waiting as the staff at the Norick Library worked to correct the issue. No one left. They wanted to see what happened next. At times funny, sad, poignant and informative, the film 1 in 3, written and directed by Lagueria Davis, won over the audience of deadCENTER and finished with extended applause…
The film was also informative as well as entertaining, as was stated by audience members during the Q&A:
The statistic, from which the title is derived, surprised everyone. “I had no idea that one in three women were affected by domestic violence, much less that one in four will face sexual assault,” commented one audience member.
“As a man,” shared another viewer, “it shocked me to realize this. That means that in the office where I work, which has six female workers, two of those women have faced something horrific, and they are the sweetest women on the planet.”
“This is the first independent film I’ve seen,” one of the audience member remarked. “I never expected to see such a high-quality film, especially shot here in Oklahoma. I was just amazed.”
In the end, that’s what it is all about… 1 in 3 touching people’s lives and making an impact! People WANT to see this film!!! People WANT to talk about this film and what it means, which is the first step in figuring out what it is that we can do individually in our communities to spark change or create a dialogue about something that affects millions of lives daily.
Stepping off the soapbox… now!!
In other news, 1 in 3 had another screening in Tulsa on Wednesday at the Oklahoma Coalition Against Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Conference.
