1 in 3 at OCADVSA Conference!!!

Not even a week after the screening at deadCENTER, 1 in 3 had another screening in Tulsa for the Oklahoma Coalition Against Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Conference.  The screening took place on Wednesday, June 16th at 5pm.  I was extremely nervous about this screening, because the audience would be made up of domestic violence and sexual assault professionals.  So, it was kind of like a moment of truth if you will.

1 in 3 at OCADVSA Conference

There was a Q & A before the screening of the film, because the audience was eager to know more about the project.  For most, it was the first time that any of them had heard of 1 in 3.  So, one of the first questions had to deal with whether or not it was a documentary.  We’ve gotten that question ALOT!  I think, because of the subject matter many people are expecting to see a documentary OR something like the Jennifer Lopez film “Enough”.  1 in 3 is neither and is best described in a review written by Sunrise Tippeconnie on The Candler Blog, “1 in 3 is not so much a depiction of Lifetime–melodrama nor the exploitive horrors that are common in domestic abuse thrillers, but a more realistic drafting of the possibilities of subtle daily domestic violence.”

After the Q & A, the lights dimmed and we were ready to rock-n-roll!!!  It was interesting to see what this audience thought was funny, but I didn’t think 1 in 3 could SHOCK this audience, because most were advocates or at the very least shelter workers.  At the end of the film, Marcia Smith, Executive Director of the coalition,  said a few words.  What carried the most weight with me was when she said, “as an advocate we’ve all had our Ophelia”.  You will have to see the film in order to put that statement into its proper context.  Following the film, I was able to speak with several programs who are interested in acquiring the film for their education group.  Another opportunity also presented itself, October is domestic violence month.  So, I spoke with the coordinator of The Silent Witness March and we are looking at teaming up this October to create something memorable for 2010.

Table of Wisdom!

The following day, I attended more workshops.  During a break I was able to have a conversation with an audience member who was unable to speak with me following the screening.  She spoke openly and candidly, “it was hard to watch because of what I do.  I knew someone was going to die, I just didn’t know who.  It was good, very suspenseful – but hard to watch…” As she trailed off, I could tell that 1 in 3 had struck a chord.  She then asked for a copy to take back to her program.  I think that is something that we’ll continue to see as 1 in 3 makes its way through the festival circuit.  At least, we hope that it’s something we’ll continue to see.

Well folks, we have some exciting things going on with 1 in 3.  Remember how a few blogs ago I wrote that, “we saw the light and then some…” Well, we’re kind of back in the tunnel again, because we have some sound issues that we just have to work out before we can feel ready enough to distribute 1 in 3 out to the masses.  We have a hand full of scenes where sound cold use some fine tuning.  So, we have a meeting set up next week with our third sound dude.  You know what they say, third time’s a charm!  I’m betting that it is :-)

Until next time, folks….
